Insurethebox looks to Open Square for its core systems

Insurethebox entered the UK motor insurance market in May 2010 with an innovative proposition where drivers are insured on a miles driven basis and rewarded according to driving behaviour - all through an in-car telematics device.

This fresh new approach has taken the market by storm, and the company already has in excess of 50,000 customers.

As a brand new start-up company, insurethebox were in a position to evaluate the entire market to find the best possible software for their business.  Timescales were a key factor, with the company wanting to go live within six months of the start of the project.

Insurethebox approached us initially to demonstrate the capability of our Napier calculations engine. They required far greater flexibility than other motor rating engines could deliver, coupled with an ability to handle aggregator volumes and response times.  It became clear very quickly that Napier would more than fit the bill.

The decision was made to adopt the Napier rating engine and this in turn led to a detailed evaluation of Pact, our contract administration engine.  With its unique total configuration by modelling approach, we were able to demonstrate Pact’s ability to handle their proposed insurance products even though these were entirely new to the market.

Having also decided to use Pact, it was a natural choice to use our other products too - PortalWizard for the public, customer and staff user interfaces, and MailMerger for the production of all documents in an electronic format.

All our products can be deployed in the cloud or in a data centre, and this provided a level of comfort for the executive team at insurethebox that scalability would not become an issue as the business grew.

So, in close partnership with the insurethebox team, Open Square began work in August 2009.  Using an iterative prototyping approach, we were able to make regular deliveries of functionality commencing within days of starting work.  By May 2010, insurethbox were ready to launch.  In that time we delivered an end-to-end telematics motor insurance solution, running 24*7, fully linked to moneysupermarket.com, and handling all quoting, policy issuance and accounting, together with a customer portal putting miles driven and policy documents online.

Perhaps best of all, insurethebox staff have been able to quickly master the model driven nature of our software and can themselves make rapid changes to rates, documents, screens, etc...
